The Biennale of Montreal 2009

During the recent Boston conference International Opportunities in the Arts, Claude Gosselin, the general and artistic director of the 25-year-old, organization, Centre international d' art contemporain de Montreal, (CIAC) participated in a panel discussion focused on the phenomenon of some 300 global biennial and triennial projects.
He discussed the development of the 2009 Biennale of Montreal (BNL MTL 09) which opens to the public on May 1 and will end on May 31. Originally CIAC organized projects known as "Les Cent jours." The one hundred day long, or three month projects covered the summer into the fall, a prime season for cultural tourism. This evolved into a biennial format and given the current state of the economy and its impact on the arts the version in 2009 has been compressed into a very dense month. The full schedule of events appears below.
Over the years we have attended a number of the projects organized by Claude and his partner, Pierre Pilotte, for CIAC. A consistent notion has been to expect the unexpected. With no permanent home, pavilions or property, as is the case with long established exhibitions like the Venice Biennale, Sao Paolo Biennale, or Documenta, it has been necessary to adapt to whatever space and resources are available.
This free form organizational structure has also assured that the concepts of Gosselin are constantly changing and evolving with the cutting edge of international contemporary culture. With the growth of the internet, its plethora of programs and games, the youth of the world have been engaged in high speed communications and appropriation facilitated by the cut and paste nature of computer based programs.
A constant flux through texting and such popular social networking options as My Space, Twitter and Facebook, to mention just a few, have led to a fast and interactive culture. Rapid change and morphing are the norm. This has impacted the worlds of music, art, film and media with the notion of interactivity. It implies a hands on approach as participants are involved in threads of dialogue commenting on the postings of others, engaging in graphic morphing in the visual arts, or sampling in music.
In the current gestalt nothing is final or static. Exploring these phenomena is the exciting and risky agenda of the current Biennale. What is seen and heard during the opening on May 1 will be entirely changed by the time that the event winds down. The public will be invited to dive in and interact with works of art on many levels.
Berkshire Fine Arts will attend and report on the challenging Montreal Biennale. Below is a brief statement from the director and the full schedule of events. Since this was taken from the French/ English site, which is a work in progress, some of the rich nuances of text have been lost in translation. But this is the spirit and flavor of provocative international exchanges.
Statement by Claude Gosselin
It began with an idea from Scott Burnham who wanted to organize a contemporary art biennial based on a theme of "open culture". The project was further developed while retaining the proposed artists and new creators were extended an invitation to join us.
Endeavoring to encourage exchanges among individuals, to publicize creativity as well as the creative process and to promote interaction among artists of all origins, the BNL MTL 09 is indeed committed to the « open culture » pathway. This will resonate throughout all planned events and will bring citizens together centered on a notion of sharing, cooperation and knowledge.
We take this opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to commissioners and artists, but also to the federal and Québec governments, the City of Montréal, public agencies and private enterprises and individuals, all of whom have provided financial support to this biennial. Finally, we would be remiss in not expressing our gratitude to our devoted employees and to the active members of the Board of Directors of the Centre international d'art contemporain de Montréal, producer of the BNL MTL.
