Art and Story in Wharton’s Poetry

Edith Wharton was a connoisseur of fine art and found poetic inspiration in paintings, sculpture, and architecture. Join us on Thursday, April 14th, for an illustrated talk by Wharton scholar, Dr. Irene Goldman-Price, on Wharton’s poetry and the art that stirred her. Tellers of Tales: Traditional and Contemporary Storytelling

Location: Main House

Two master storytellers, Matthew Dicks and Tom Lee, demonstrate the legacy of oral storytelling by juxtaposing traditional folk tales with modern stories of everyday life.  Matthew Dicks first started telling stories in 2011 and has won 20 Moth StorySLAMs as well as 3 Moth GrandSLAM championships. Tom Lee has been telling traditional stories since the eighties, and has performed at the Edinburgh Festival, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and participated in the 2015 Teller-in-Residence series at the International Storytelling Center in Jonesborough, Tennessee. Everything that’s Old is New Again, Just Ask My Plastic Surgeon

A Reading with Stone Court Writer-in-Residence Sion Dayson

Stone Court Writer-In-Residence Sion Dayson will read from her work, including the upcoming When Things Were Green, published by Queen’s Ferry Press in 2017. Refreshments and conversation with the author will follow the reading. Authors Sophie McManus and Stephanie Clifford will speak about how Edith Wharton continues to spark the imagination of writers in the 21st century. Both Clifford and McManus debut novels are inspired by Wharton’s own works. McManus is the author of The Unfortunates, a finalist for the 2015 Discover Award, the Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize, and a notable book by The Washington Post and Entertainment Weekly. Rockwell, Wharton, and World War I

Join Norman Rockwell Museum’s Curator of Education, Tom Daly, and Wharton scholar Alan Price for a conversation on these two American artists and their responses to “The Great War.” Daly will discuss Rockwell’s World War I Saturday Evening Post covers and the home-front, while Price will discuss Edith Wharton’s work abroad.
