In his practice and process, Peter Lipsitt investigates forms and their relationships: weight vs. levity, affinity vs. separation, and sense of scale relative to size, for examples.

Exhibiting new work, Lipsitt builds with cement and hydrocal, sensuous liquid-into-solid materials, with inclusions of repurposed  wood, steel, and copper. Bit players in the narrative include his out-of studio  "assistants," Vermont beavers (Castor canadensis) which prepared saplings for several sculptures.

There are table-top habitations, small wall-like flats, doors and  towers. Receptive to pitfalls, pratfalls, opportunities, and happy accidents, Lipsitt retains essential control of the way ahead, while entertaining uncertainty.

In the May issue of ART NEW ENGLAND, Alicia Faxon writes that with  the “...theme of habitation and play on the double view of surface and hollowed core..., Lipsitt creates a world and a settlement of the spirit.”

Lipsitt is a graduate of Brandeis University. He attended the Skowhegan School prior to studies at Yale School of Art (BFA and MFA  degrees).

He has exhibited his sculpture at Chesterwood, Lars Anderson  Park, Triangle Workshop, Wheelock College, Sculpture Key West, The Rose Museum, Boston City Hall, the Art Complex Museum, with solos at Brown University Library, Wheaton College, Mather House-Harvard University, and the Fuller Museum.

His work is in the collections of  the City of Boston, University Place - Cambridge, MA, the Rose Museum at Brandeis, the Harvard Art Museums, Vassar College, Ft Lauderdale Museum, Florida, and Hamilton College, among others. He also has works in many private collections.

He is a recipient of a 2007 grant from Artist Resource Trust, a fund of the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.

A member of Boston Sculptors since its foundation 20 years ago, he has had several solo exhibitions in the successive venues. His  studios are in Boston's South End.

Peter Lipsitt's work is showing concurrently with the work of George Sherwood.
