Hi All:  Well, lots going on this week:  Labor Day, First Day of School, Rosh Hashanah - the Jewish New Year 5771,  and HOOSAC RIVER LIGHTS III this Saturday at Dark by the Holden Street Bridge in North Adams.  Visit MASS MoCA , have Dinner and stroll Downtown and then walk to the River for some visual treats.  Hopefully the weather will be good this year.

Mermaid Beatrice is swimming her way up the Hudson River.  She told me that she had an interesting encounter while heading to visit Manhattan's Intrepid Museum.  Apparently, the developer of the 54-story new Eventi Hotel on West 29th Street had his binoculars with him while he was inspecting his construction and saw what he thought was a Mermaid in the Hudson.  He got so excited that he hired a water taxi and met up with Mermaid Beatrice around 43rd Street.  Mermaid Beatrice explained that she was headed to North Adams by the Hoosac near MASS MoCA.  The developer was so impressed by this encounter that he proceeded to name the top 30 floors - the Mermaid Beatrice Apartments.  Rents will average around $5,000 per month for those interested in this unique connection (www.beatricenyc.com

).  Maybe if you say you know Mermaid Beatrice you'll get a discount?

Anyway, Mermaid Beatrice is due to Swim up the Hudson to past Troy, New York on the 10th and then arrive in North Adams on the 11th.  Hopefully, she won't get lost as our regional spellings are confusing.  She first has to see the sign for the Hoosick River at Schaghticoke and go east.  Mermaid Beatrice is planning on taking a break at Hoosick Falls, as she wants to pay respects at the nearby grave of Grandma Moses whose art she enjoys.  She then travels south to Williamstown where the Hoosick automatically becomes the Hoosic and then east again to North Adams where it becomes the Hoosac.   Her traveling companions are the region's Fish, but this time she has been told that a Phish named Mike Gordon has something to do with this year's HOOSAC RIVER LIGHTS III Event. When I was in California a few weeks ago and met with Mermaid Beatrice she had just purchased her first iPhone and was getting notifications that Phishing was taking place.  Like the rest of us - she's confused.  Please welcome Mermaid Beatrice at Dark this Saturday by the Holden Street Bridge.

Mermaid Beatrice was sorry to have missed the Wilco Sounds, but is looking forward to the Sounds of Mike Gordon of the Phish and to Matt Hopkins' original composition honoring the Hoosac.  Our international Light Artists this year include Marjorie Minkin from North Adams, Rikayo Horimizu from Japan and Inhye Lee from Korea.  This is Part I.  Part II will take place when the Hoosac River is frozen on Sunday 20 March 2011 - The Vernal Equinox with virtual distribution around the world. HOOSAC RIVER LIGHTS Events are meant to bring attention to the River that was the life blood of Industrial North Adams with plans underway for a River and City Revitalization.  This year we can also use this opportunity to reflect on 9/11.

Internationally known Visual Artist Marjorie Minkin will be exhibiting her painted molded Lexan Sculptures which look like Water.  ANOTHER SIDE OF IN is the title of this amazing group and is a multi-media collaboration together with Musician Mike Gordon and Creative Technologist Jamie Robertson.  Mike Gordon is the bass player for the band Phish and it is his customized sounds from his album Inside In that are incorporated in to his mother Marjorie Minkin's Sculptures.  Jamie Robertson who was Director of Research and Development for Walt Disney Imagineering designed and built the innovative electronics enabling the viewer to experience and interact with the Sculptures.  Rikayo Horimizu and Inhye Lee's Animated Projections in the Hoosac will amaze you.

Hope to see you all Saturday Night
