We reported in this magazine in April about a conference, held in Boston, Massachusetts, which was initiated by Mary Sherman and TransCulturalExchange. There, we attended meetings to facilitate world-wide artist exchanges, panel discussions, and a presentation by Professor Dorothea Fleiss, who is based in Stuttgart, Germany.

Fleiss and a group of artists founded the East-West Artists Union in the 90s, in order primarily to support East European artist exchanges with Western colleagues. Fleiss and her group held the 9th International Symposium of Contemporary Art from August 25 – to September 3, in Carei, Romania, her home town.

Sixty artists from 33 countries were invited by the Prefecture of Satu Mare - the Romanian Ministry of Culture and Cults - Satu-Mare County Museum - Romanian National Commission for UNESCO - Satu Mare County's School Inspectorate Romania - Local Council of Carei's Municipality –Partners: Heinrich Boell Foundation – Radio Transilvania –Buletin de Carei –TransCulturalExchange, and others. The artists came together for ten days to live, work, exchange ideas and promote world peace and understanding. And, as one can see in the accompanying series of photographs, primarily a large gym served as the collective studio. The artists shared meals together and Dorothea's parents cooked for all 60 participants, as they had done in previous years. The days were spent sharing ideas and resources, supporting the working process. Discussions and evening presentations were open to the public.

The symposium ended, as in prior years, with and exhibition at the Satu-Mare County Museum and a vernissage, to which the whole county was invited. This event is conveyed in the accompanying images provided by Fleiss.

Professor Fleiss'  East West Artists, and the 9th International Symposium of Contemporary Art, grew from private and personal initiatives and an enormous commitment, which we sincerely applaud. Bravo.

Sechzig Kuenstler aus 33 Laendern waren dort eingeladen von: The Prefecture of Satu Mare – The Romanian Ministry of Culture and Cults – Satu-Mare County Museum – Romanian National Commission for UNESCO – Satu Mare County's School Inspectorate Romania – Local Council of Carei's Municipality – und Partner: Heinrich Boell Foundation – Radio Transilvania – Buletin de Carei – TransCulturalExchange – und andere.

Bravo.
