The Huntington Theatre Company’s production of Candide has grossed $1,159,864 to date, becoming the highest grossing musical in the company’s 30-year history. Candide now surpasses Ain’t Misbehavin’, which has held the record since 2003.

Tickets for the twelve remaining performances through October 16 are still available.

Candide also becomes the second-highest grossing show in the Huntington’s history behind Butley starring Tony Award winner Nathan Lane (2003).

The ambitious production, featuring an award-winning cast of 19 and a live orchestra of 14 musicians, recreates Voltaire’s satirical story of Candide, a young optimist shipwrecked, soldiered, swindled, and separated repeatedly from his true love, Cunegonde. The production, directed and newly adapted by Tony Award winner and MacArthur “genius” Mary Zimmerman and featuring Leonard Bernstein’s beloved, soaring score, has received stellar reviews from audiences and critics alike.

  • Joyce Kulhawik calls it “Absolute perfection,” and says, “If you see nothing else this season, see Candide!”
  • Wicked Local/TAB says, “Theatre this great doesn’t come around this often – don’t miss it!”
  • The Boston Phoenix calls Candide “one of Boston’s most gratifying revivals.”
  • Mark Favermann, Berkshirefineaerts.com, wrote, "A true theatrical spectacle, this presentation is a don't miss event."

Candide continues at the Huntington Theatre Company through Sunday, October 16. Tickets are still available online at huntingtontheatre.org, by phone at 617 266 0800, or in person at the BU Theatre Box Office (264 Huntington Avenue / Avenue of the Arts) and the Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA Box Office (527 Tremont Street / South End).
