Sondheim's Sunday in the Park with George

Summer 2027 Co Production Barrington Stage and Tectonic Theatre Project

By: - Oct 14, 2026

Pittsfield, MA - October 14, 2026) – Barrington Stage Company (Artistic Director Alan Paul and Executive Director Greg Reiner), and Tectonic Theatre Project (Founder and Artistic Director Moisés Kaufman and Executive Director Matt Joslyn), have announced a major new co-production of the landmark Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Sunday in the Park with George will be staged during BSC’s 2027 season. With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, the production will be directed by two-time Tony Award nominee Moisés Kaufman (Broadway: 33 Variations, Here There Are Blueberries, I Am My Own Wife; Off-Broadway: The Laramie Project). Sunday in the Park with George will be produced in BSC’s Boyd Quinson Theater (30 Union Street) in Summer 2027.

Sunday in the Park with George is a deeply moving exploration of the art of making art. The musical spans one hundred years, transitioning from pointillist painter Georges Seurat’s obsessive creation of his masterpiece, A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte, in 1884 Paris to his great-grandson George’s search for artistic inspiration in 1984 New York. Widely considered one of the most innovative and acclaimed musicals of all time, the original production won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama alongside numerous Tony Awards.

Barrington Stage Company has a long history of producing the musicals of Stephen Sondheim, with previous seasons having included critically acclaimed productions of Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Into the Woods, and West Side Story.

“Sunday in the Park with George is one of the great achievements of the American musical theater—an exploration of the passion and courage it takes to create something beautiful and lasting,” said BSC’s Artistic Director Alan Paul. “It reminds us why art matters, and why we devote our lives to making it.”

“At Barrington Stage, we approach the great American musicals with the ambition to create definitive productions that audiences will remember for years,” said BSC’s Executive Director Greg Reiner. “From On the Town to A Chorus Line, that ambition has helped shape BSC’s national reputation. With Moisés Kaufman, one of the great creative forces in theater today, and our partners at Tectonic Theater Project, we have an extraordinary opportunity to bring fresh insight and imagination to Sunday in the Park with George and make the Berkshires a destination for this landmark musical.”

“To me, Sunday in the Park with George is the most spiritual show that Sondheim wrote, and my absolute favorite musical in the world," Kaufman commented. "It is a brilliant, layered meditation on what it costs to create something truly monumental, and it's just full of grace. A musical like this feels so nurturing at this moment, when we all need it. I am incredibly honored to collaborate with the extraordinary team at Barrington Stage Company to bring this magnificent score and timeless story to vibrant life on stage.”

Tony- and Emmy-nominated director and playwright, and recipient of the National Medal of Arts from President Obama, Moisés Kaufman is Founder and Artistic Director of Tectonic Theater Project, which he has led since its founding in 1991. Broadway credits include Paradise Square (10 Tony Award nominations), the revival of Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song, Rajiv Joseph’s Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo with Robin Williams, the revival of The Heiress starring Jessica Chastain, 33 Variations starring Jane Fonda (Tony Award nomination for Best Play), and Doug Wright’s I Am My Own Wife (Obie Award and Tony, Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award and Lucille Lortel Award nominations). Off-Broadway/Regional: Here There Are Blueberries (Tectonic Theater Project/La Jolla Playhouse), Seven Deadly Sins (Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience, Tectonic Theater Project/Madison Wells Live), One Arm by Tennessee Williams (Tectonic Theater Project/The New Group); The Laramie Project (writer/director; Theater in the Square, Drama Desk nomination); The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later (writer/director; Alice Tully Hall); Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde (writer/director; Lucille Lortel Award for Best Play, Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play and the Joe A.
