HallSpace is pleased to announce an exhibition of new abstract paintings and drawings by Kathy Soles. In Happening at the Edge, Soles continues to draw inspiration from nature, specifically areas of transition: the shore, meadows, tree line, and natural boundaries. These areas are a change of habitat for different life forms. These places can bring anxiety and calm. The landscape is always changing, creatures cross, seasons pass, and all that is left are memories. Soles finds the essence of place through abstraction. Her abstract paintings build a different perspective on landscape as opposed to a visual recording of the scene. The paintings are a reactive, physical response. Soles writes, “In direct response to place and memory, my work develops into a dialog between dense accumulations of paint and drawing materials and open passages evoking light, air, land, and water. The accreted marks tell their own histories with a sense of urgency and vulnerability as they collide, dissipate, and reassemble.” Biography She has exhibited widely in both group and solo exhibitions. Her exhibition venues include HallSpace, Dorchester MA; Danforth Museum of Art, Framingham MA; Portland Museum of Art, ME; Dartmouth College, NH; Fitchburg Art Museum, MA; Fuller Craft Museum, MA; The National Museum of Fine Arts, Vietnam; and Apothiki Arts Center, Paros, Greece. She has also been awarded artist residencies at the Millay Colony, Austerlitz, NY; the Apothiki Arts Center in Paros, Greece; the Goetemann Residency, Gloucester, MA; Provincetown Compact C-Scape Residency; and Cill Rialaig, Ballinskelligs, Ireland.
