Today, with few surprises in view of the considerable media debate last summer about extending the shoulder seasons and adding more accessible programming, the Boston Symphony Orchestra released its schedule of concerts for the 2008 season at Tanglewood. If you scroll down the full schedule is listed below or click on the link above and access the BSO website. The season opens with the Mark Morris Dance Group, as it did last year, on Thursday, June 26, in Ozawa Hall, and ends as it traditionally has, with a change last summer when it opened the Shed concerts, with the much anticipated annual performance of the massive Beethoven's Ninth Symphony on Sunday, August 24. While the BSO's James Levine conducted the work last year and Seiji Ozawa in 2006, this time, the baton will pass to Christoph von Dohnanyi.

There have been media reports, particularly in the Berkshire Eagle, of declining attendance and revenue as well as ill treatment of volunteers who were asked to make cash contributions to the BSO in order to qualify to donate their time and services. Some of these changes were attributed to a new and different management policy which is centered in Boston and seemingly insensitive to the longstanding Berkshire community and its fierce loyalty to the Tanglewood program. A favorable response to that criticism this season will be a special price for season lawn passes for Berkshire residents. It was rather odd to witness the deep passions inspired by the media debate about the need for the BSO to tweak its season and offer a broader range of programming in order to draw in the younger audience that it needs to sustain itself during the coming decades.

Last year, an experiment in rock 'n' roll featuring a revival tour of the New Cars was a dismal failure. Terrible weather didn't help. But without Ric Ocasek, who sat out the tour, and his deceased co-leader, Ben Orr, the New Cars ran out of gas. Following that flop, further discussion of introducing discreet elements of rock, jazz and blues into the mainstream season evoked accusations of vulgarizing  Tanglewood. There were images of the pristine grounds being overrun by ersatz Woodstock rockers camping out and perhaps chopping down some of those mighty trees for firewood. Of course the shoulder season, however brief, includes the Tanglewood Jazz Festival which is now an established tradition. Last year, there was a terrific weekend of jazz organized by the widely respected entrepreneur Freddy Taylor. The Jazz Festival returns post season but no scheduling has been announced.

The stalwart BSO old guard need not be concerned as the upcoming Tanglewood season, under the able direction of James Levine, remains on track with its great traditions. The most notable difference appears to be a greater emphasis on Opera which is Levine's specialty. Rene Fleming will be featured in "Eugene Onegin" by Tchaikovsky and Levine will also conduct a concert version of the rarely presented "Les Troyens" by Berlioz. Levine will also conduct a staged version of the Brecht-Weill opera "The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahogany."

Levine is reported to be in "great shape." He took a spill on the stage of the BSO some time back that tore a rotator cuff and required surgery followed by rehab. There was some concern about his ability to sustain through a grueling season last year. But he appears to be back on top of his form and will be in residence for a full six and a half weeks. He has been involved in every detail of an Elliott Carter program, July 20 through 24, as a part of the annual new music festival. Part of the mandate of Levine for the BSO has been to introduce modern and contemporary music into the program. These efforts have not always been well attended at Tanglewood in a program that once again is heavy on Beethoven and Mozart with appearances by celebrity soloists like Yo Yo Ma, Peter Serkin, Pinchas Zukerman, and Emanuel Ax. As well as the array of world renowned guest conductors including Bernard Haitink, Leonard Slatkin, Peter Oundjian, Carlos Miguel Prieto, Andrew Davis, Hans Graf, Andre Previn, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Rafael Fruehbeck de Burgos, and in her debut, BSO assistant conductor Shi-Yeon Sung.

Last summer there was a throng of people attending the Boston Pops and Keith Lockhart evening of a staged performance of the classic musical "Carousel." Surely there will be similar enthusiasm for an evening of Sondheim's "A Little Night Music." There will also be a popular tribute to the music of Leonard Bernstein on what would have been his 90th birthday.

While keepers of the flame insisting on the purity of the Tanglewood program's dedication to "serious" music need not fear, at least for now, the vulgarians will, more or less, get to chew on a couple of meaty bones. While not exactly "Mr. Rock and Roll" a Berkshire neighbor, James Taylor, be still dear heart, will appear in back to back evenings during the Fourth of July weekend. Tickets to the Taylor performances, sure to be a sellout, go on sale February 3. And tickets to the rest of the Tanglewood schedule are offered beginning February 17. Once again, as part of the "shoulder season," on June 28, Garrison Keilor will get things rolling in the Shed with a live performance of his radio show "A Prairie Home Companion."  Another pop presentation will feature Broadway singer Barbara Cook making a Tanglewood debut at Ozawa Hall on July 13 during a tour that celebrates her 80th birthday. And John Williams returns with the annual film scores night conducting the Pops on July 26.

Of particular interest to Berkshire County resident is a new offer of a season's lawn pass for just $75. Last year the price for a single lawn ticket was $17 which is the same as the cost of attending one of the popular Saturday morning rehearsals with the opportunity to get rush seats in the Shed. It is always great fun on the lawn with family and friends hunkered down on blankets and folding chairs enjoying a dinner and music under the stars. Some patrons even prefer lawn seats and those large video projections over being seated at the back of the shed. So this new feature will surely boost attendance and make visitors more willing to sample the full range of offerings. That is surely one good move toward building future audiences. Thanks Tanglewood. We needed that.
