Ancient Secrets

Winter's Tale

The night is cold
Late December
Nearly Christmas
Come friend
Sit with me
Close to the hearth
Watch the flames
Ever brightly changing
Hot sparks dancing
Lean closer
Something I must say
Whispered
By the fire
For your ear only
To hear
Secrets told to me
Long years
Pondering them
Odd and lonely
Passed on
Now to you
Tell no one
Promise me
Until it's time
There dear one
Now you know
As did our
Ancestors
Struggled
Through their hours
As do we
Take my hand
This is the poet's
Well guarded grip
In our genes
Shared memory
Come that day
When all will
Be revealed
With such dismay
To those trusted
Few and brave
Beneath the tree
That shades in summer
Burned for its
Warmth
Like now
Come winter
While we wait
Drowsy and sedate
For return of
Persephone
From dark Hades
Her living hell
Joining ours on earth
With no exit
