  • Babel from the White Lights Festival

Cacaphony of Words, Dance and Music

    By: Susan Hall - Oct 28th, 2016

The impact of the Tower of Babel is immediately felt in the silence of the Rose Theater. Watching steel frames in the shapes of cubes and rectangles built up and toppled on stage, seeing people trapped by them and also liberated graphically, drives home our divided world and the need for human unification. These structures both divide and unite. There is hope.

  • Dorrance Dance at Jacob’s Pillow

    Tapping Into New Possibilities

    By: Charles Giuliano - Aug 12th, 2016

Based on last year's collaboration with Toshi Reagon's band Big Lovely yesterday's performance of Dorrance Dance was, for us, the most anticipated of the Jacob's Pillow season. Michelle Dorrance is celebrated for pushing the limits of the indigenous, vernacular art form of tap dancing. Collaborating with the musician and inventor Nicholas Van Young there seemed too much emphasis on sound at the sacrifice of dance.

With striking resemble to Flamenco, Irish step dancing, and African drumming this artform first evolved in the 17th century. The irony is that this ancient dance is new to American audiences.

  • 2015 in the Arts

    Hiphopera, Tap, Berkshires and Beyond

    By: Charles Giuliano - Jan 02nd, 2016

In some of the most exciting and insightful productions and performances of the year there was a notable cross pollination and invention as vernacular street cultures and indigenous art forms conflated into high art. Classic works were not just revived but reinvented from the insight out. The best works of 2016 raised the bar through risk taking and challenging audiences. These rare experiences tend to make the majority of what we experience ordinary and enervating. In an era signified by ubiquitous standing ovations what is truly worthy of special recognition?

Disney Hall is an acoustical dream and its warm, intimate seating encircling the musicians and performers is mirrored perfectly by real surround sound. Under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel, the LA Phil shines.

Four dance pieces set to the music of Thomas Adès were performed as the finale to a magnificent White Light Festival presented by Lincoln Center.
