  • Complexions Contemporary Ballet, at Jacob’s Pillow

    A Most Powerful Ballet Company

    Perhaps, it’s not accidental that 'Complexions' followed the 'Hip Hop Festival.'The performance started with an excerpt of 'Hissy Fits, 2006,' to ongoing very loud percussion, sounding like drum beats to, as per program, J.S. Bach music. And the music mostly continued at a high decimal, just like hip hop.

    Jacob’s Pillow today announced the artists who will participate in 10 onsite residencies this fall through next summer, as part of the Pillow Lab residency program. Artists participating in this series, in chronological order, are: Ilya Vidrin, Sekou McMiller, LaJuné McMillian, Minty Fresh Circus, Aakash Odedra, Kyle Marshall Choreography, CONTRA-TIEMPO Activist Dance Theater, Hari Krishnan/inDANCE, Theresa Ruth Howard, and Miguel Gutierrez.

    For PIXEL, by Compagnie Käfig, today based near Lyon, France, ten male Hip Hop dancers, French style, a woman contortionist, a roller-skater, small robots carrying tiny lights, and a huge metal hoop shared and interacted on stage with highly sophisticated projections, music, and sounds.

    The Hungarian National Ballet’s production of Don Quixote at The Budapest Opera House was a joyful presentation. The energy and mirth emanating from the stage was infectious and intoxicating: I was practically jumping out of my seat with excitement by the end of the Act III pas de deux as Kitri, danced by Tatyjana Melnyik, balanced on pointe for what seemed an eternity.

    The Royal Ballet of the United Kingdom, will appear at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival for the first time, as the company’s sole stop in the United States in 2024. To celebrate this milestone, Jacob’s Pillow will for the first time feature daily back-to-back performances from one company in multiple venues, with one program on the outdoor Henry J. Leir Stage, and another distinct program in the historic indoor Ted Shawn Theatre.

    Based on last year's collaboration with Toshi Reagon's band Big Lovely yesterday's performance of Dorrance Dance was, for us, the most anticipated of the Jacob's Pillow season. Michelle Dorrance is celebrated for pushing the limits of the indigenous, vernacular art form of tap dancing. Collaborating with the musician and inventor Nicholas Van Young there seemed too much emphasis on sound at the sacrifice of dance.

    It's Berlioz. It's puppets. It's a supershow. The twentieth anniversary production of Basil Twist's remarkable Symphonie Fantastique is at the ever enterprising and surprising HERE in New York. Christopher O'Riley performs Liszt's piano transcription of Berlioz's love letter/nightmare. Twist performs his magic in an aquarium filled with 1,000 gallons of water.

    It has been a summer of celebrating Centennials for Leonard Bernstein and his collaborator, Jerome Robbins. The Jacob's Pillow season ended with Stars of American Ballet. They offered a tribute of five Robbins dances curated by New York City Ballet principal Daniel Ulbricht.

    The summer long centenary celebration continued last night at Tanglewood with an All Bernstein Program conducted by Andris Nelsons. It featured Fancy Free a 1944 collaboration with choreographe Jerome Robbins for Fancy Free. That theme was expanded into their musical On the Town. The dance was performed in collaboration with Boston Ballet.

    It's been 40 years since the renowned and well traveled Houston Ballet has visited Jacob's Pillow. The company if noted for its depth in superbly trained principal dancers. There are many individual stars in its firmament. On a hot and steamy night they presented four works, three by artistic director, Stanton Welch AM, one a world premiere, and another by perennial Pillow favorite Trey McIntyre.

You stand naked and revealed. Who are you? What are you? Who, what do you want to be? What is your spiritual caliber?” José Limón. This past week Jacob's Pillow celebrated the 70th anniversary of the company he founded.

    Hubbard Street Dance Chicago celebrated its 40th anniversary with yet another visit to Jacob's Pillow. At two and a half hours, with works by four choreographers, it was one of the longest, most diverse and best received programs of the Pillow season.
