    Doris Duke Theatre Repoens

    Jacob’s Pillow welcomes Andrew Schneider and collaborators to present the world premiere of HERE in the Doris Duke Theatre from July 16-20, marking the first week-long performance run in the newly-opened venue, and the first time since 2019 that the summer dance festival has presented works in all three venues on its iconic site in the Berkshires.

Although the signature tap dance of Michelle Dorrance was an element, the evening long performance “The Center Will Not Hold” was unlike anything previously presented by the company.

    Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival announces the start of an exciting new era with the much anticipated opening of the new Doris Duke Theatre, a transformational space to support the future of dance. Occupying the site of the former studio theater, which was destroyed by fire in November 2020, the reimagined Doris Duke Theatre is set to become one of the most technologically advanced theaters in the world dedicated to dance.

Renowned for their “invention, attitude, and urban edge” (The Boston Globe), BODYTRAFFIC will offer dynamic performances exploring the power of memory and the unexpected reminders all around us that provoke deep feelings of nostalgia.

    Fly By Night Dance presented its annual New York Aerial Dance Festival at the Manhattan Movement and Arts Center. Founded by Julie Lutwick, the group is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of modern dance. This program demonstrated how storytelling can be enhanced through trapeze work, live music, and the recitation of poignant historic poems.

One work has been around the city in various forms for a while.  Black Lodge dives into William Burroughs’ life.  Queer, the film starring Daniel Craig, has brought Burroughs mainstream attention.  The film with music by David T. Little, wrestles with movies as canned opera.

    Alicia Key has created herself as “Ali” in the musical Hell’s Kitchen now playing on Broadway. Keys grew up in the Manhattan Plaza complex, a few blocks from Times Square. Built during one of New York’s deep downturns, the building was supposed to be an upper middle class apartment house. Discounted apartments did rent.  It became one of New York’s most desirable residences for artists. It formed the artist Keys.

Physically charged and visually striking,?the work?is choreographed by South African native and internationally-known choreographer Gregory Vuyani Maqoma.?Cion?draws inspiration from author Zakes Mda’s novel, Cion?, and Ravel’s Boléro. It is, in?Maqoma’s?words, “a lament, a requiem required to awaken a part of us, the connection to the departed souls.”

    For its first appearance at Jacob's Pillow in 25 years the renowned Parsons Dance presented a diverse program of seven works. It included the legendary Caught as well as two new works. Parsons choreographed five works while the other two were by Jamar Roberts and Robert Battle. They brought all back home with music of Earth Wind & Fire.
