Bio:

Publisher & Editor. Charles was the director of exhibitions for the New England School of Art & Design at Suffolk University where he taught art history and the humanities. He taugh tModern Art and the Avant-garde for Metropolitan College of Boston University. After many years as a contributor, columnist and editor for a range of print publications from Art New England, Art News, the Boston Phoenix, the Boston Herald Traveler and Patriot Ledger, to mention a few, he went on line with Maverick Arts which evolved into a website.

    For the past 21 years Fred Taylor has been booking the renowned jazz club Scullers. Before that he ran the legendary Jazz Workshop and Paul's Mall. With razor sharp memory Taylor discussed highlights of a career in music that started almost by accident in 1952. With amateur equipment he recorded Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond at Storyville for Fantasy Records. He has been at it ever since.

    In her native Latvia Ilona Kudina was initially trained by her father. There was no formal training in jazz which she heard on the radio or jammed with musicians in clubs. Eventually she earned a scholarship to the renowned Berklee College of Music and has remained in Boston since graduation. The gig at Scullers also served to launch a superb new CD Nothing But Illusion.

    My overview of Figurarative Expressionism was deleted by the artist, Lester Johnson, from the 1987 museum exhibition catalogue. The essay has finally been published by Acme Gallery in Boston on the occasion of a stunning and insightful exhibition. It is sad and astonishing that the remarkable works on view are not adorning the walls of major American museums. It is time for a reevaluation of this major artist.

Even ringmaster Malcolm Rogers of the MFA can't fool all of the people all of the time.

    Yaz threw the first pitch for opening day at Fenway Park. Mark Favermann invited me as well as Ben Kilgore and Joe Beggan to join him and 40,000 other fans. It was such a thrill. Hard to believe that Ben was late, With their worst start in decades, 0 for 6 by then, the Sox managed to beat the Yankees taking two out of three for the series. Predicted to go all the way the Sox have sucked so far.

    Though Entwined covers a scant 4 years, Mary Hrbacek, has been traveling the world taking photographs, and making charcoal drawings and painting of trees that have shed their leaves and exposed their so-called bones. The artist has worked in Asia and Europe, as well as Brooklyn, and New York’s Central Park, for over ten years. The work ios on view at New York's off the beaten path Creon Gallery through April 30.

    A Broadway bound production of You Can't Take It With You was initially announced to open the first season with Jenny Gersten as artistic director of the renowned Williamstown Theatre Festival. Recently WTF revealed Plan B. Now it appears that Robin Baitz’s two-person drama Three Hotels will be the leadoff. That is a cast and production cost reduction from 15 actors to two.     In the third and final installment of an interview with Ella Baff, the artistic director of Jacob's Pillow, she discusses plans for the season opening Gala on June 18. Benjamin Millepied, who is the life and artistic partner of Natalie Portman, is the co chair of the event. Philip Glass will give a rare solo performance. Baff recalls with emotion Merce Cunningham who was unable to attend to receive a reward from Pillow. We also discussed his collaborator John Cage.

    Ella Baff, the artistic director of Jacob's Pillow, described meeting the President and First Lady during an award ceremony at the White House as a "peak experience." She discussed travel to Cuba where she covered 30 companies in five days. This summer Mark Morris and his company will open the season for Tanglewood and close it for The Pillow.

    Better late than never, amazingly, Robin Williams is starring in his first Broadway play. With droll irony he is purring and pawing his way through Ragiv Joseph's acclaimed Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo. Williams on stage, bantering with the audience as the ghost of a slaughtered tiger is just sublime. But that proves to be only about a third of the play which lags when he is not around.

    After enduring the tough winter months there were signs of life on Broadway. There were droves of tourists on line for half price tickets in Times Square. Mostly tourists want those splashy musicals. But you jump the queue for a drama. There were no deals, however, for the mostly sold out run of Good People. We paid full freight for a lousy seat at the back of the house. But it was worth every penny to enjoy a fabulous performance by Frances McDormand.

He will perform solo in a Boston-area concert. On the heels of turning 66 on October 25, 2010, and the recent finish of a triumphant U.K Tour with keyboardist Rick Wakeman (a longtime YES band mate) he celebrate the release of their new album, The Living Tree.
