Bio:

Publisher & Editor. Charles was the director of exhibitions for the New England School of Art & Design at Suffolk University where he taught art history and the humanities. He taugh tModern Art and the Avant-garde for Metropolitan College of Boston University. After many years as a contributor, columnist and editor for a range of print publications from Art New England, Art News, the Boston Phoenix, the Boston Herald Traveler and Patriot Ledger, to mention a few, he went on line with Maverick Arts which evolved into a website.

Murray retired to the Berkshires after a long career as a publicist and marketing specialist for a range of organizations including the BSO, Boston Ballet, and Sarah Caldwell's Opera Company. He started his own blogs Arts America and Gay in the Berkshires. Last season he left BFA to focus on a new site Berkshire on Stage. This is the first of several dialogues about his career in the arts and an overview of the critical condition.

    The AICA-USA awards ceremony, which has been held annually for more than 25 years, will take place at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art on March 14 2011 at 6 PM. Awards will be presented by a group of distinguished artists and curators. Elizabeth C. Baker will be honored with a special Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Field of Criticism. Museum curators, artists and critics from around the country are expected to attend.

Later distinguished Phoenix art critics included Kenneth Baker, David Bonetti and Christopher Millis. Currently Greg Cook is the art critic for the Phoenix. Spanning generations this is part one of a dialogue on covering the Boston art world and the state of criticism.

    Opera Boston continues its 2010-11 season with the New England premiere of Paul Hindemith’s 1926 opera Cardillac, in a new production starring baritone Sanford Sylvan, at the Cutler Majestic Theatre (219 Tremont St., Boston). Performances take place Feb. 25 and March 1, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 27 at 3 p.m. Sung in German with English titles.

    The Wilco Solid Sound Festival is set for June 24 to 26 at Mass MoCA. Tanglewood launches its season the following Fourth of July weekend with three dates for perennial favorite James Taylor. In a surprise move Tanglewood has announced a prequel to the Taylor weekend. It will present the vintage soul group Earth Wind and Fire on Saturday, June 25, while Wilco will rock in North Adams. What gives?

    Rock and Roll Hall of Fame bands Earth, Wind, and Fire and Steely Dan are being added to the 2011 Tanglewood season line-up. Earth, Wind, and Fire will perform on Saturday, June 25, at 7 p.m. in the Koussevitzky Music Shed as part of the band’s 40th anniversary tour. Steely Dan will perform on Tuesday, July 26 at 7 p.m. in the Shed. Tickets for both events go on sale February 6, 2011.

    Under dynamic executive director, Susan Wissler, The Mount, the former estate of author Edith Wharton, has struggled to stabilize the National Historic Landmark. While there has been progress in debt reduction a tipping point is approaching. In May a $1 million principal repayment is due. In this tough economy that's a daunting amount to raise in the next few months. When news of the crisis was reported an anonymous donor stepped forward with a donation of $300,000. Hopefully that will inspire further giving to meet the imminent deadline.

Unlike last year patrons may now opt for single day tickets which are cheaper than a weekend pass. But there are a limited number of one day tickets so if that's your preference plan to act swiftly.

    The feature length, award winning, documentary film Marwencol was screened for one night at Images Cinema. It tells the story of a severely beaten, cross dressing, former alcoholic, Mark Hogancamp, who has created a World War II model village in Belgium. Using Barbie and GI dolls, jeeps and tanks he exorcises his demons by creating and photographing elaborate narratives. The Q&A that followed evoked comparisons of his brain damage to that of Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords.

  • Storefront Artists Project to Relocate Fine Arts

    Storefront Artist Project announces the relocation of its gallery and office to 31 South Street at the corner of Park Square in downtown Pittsfield Massachusetts. Storefront will be leaving its present location in the Howard building at 124 Fenn Street, a space it has occupied since 2006, and share the new South Street space with local retailer Emporium.
