During a walking tour we were fascinated by the many and varied examples of the unique tradition of wrought iron balconies overlooking the streets. In the tropical climate, in the era before air conditioning, surely these graceful architecturl features afforded the opportunity to catch a cooling evening breeze.
The balconies appear to be in varying states of repair and adornment. From buildings that cry out for a bit of TLC to those with elaborate hangings of potted plants.
With its Spanish, French, and Creole traditions surely the French Quarter has the most uniquely European flavor and accent of all of America's cities.
