Noel Coward's Private Lives at the Huntington Theatre
By: Nelida Nassar - 05/29/2012
PICK OT THE WEEK: Private Lives at the Huntington Theatre
The Huntington Theatre premieres Noël Coward’s Private Lives, a mirthful comedy of manners where a divorced couple Amanda and Elyot find themselves booked into adjoining honeymoon suites, with brand-new spouses in tow, Victor and Sybil, igniting dangerous sparks. The exes lunge and swing their way through Noël Coward’s wicked, witty best. They both discover romance and rivalry can be rekindled. This is a Noël Coward smart, elegant and stylish, romantic comedy. A spray of life’s contradictions on the themes of sex, money and social climbing prevails in this exceptional farce. Maria Aitken directs and interprets Coward’s essence with exquisite linguistic skills merging her experience as an actress and instincts as a director to create timeless humoristic moments. Her keen character analysis brings forth human nature intricacies and foibles. The play simply crackles with imagination, great writing, stylized dialogue, directing, and superior performances from leads Bianca Amato as Amanda and James Waterston as Elyot. You will laugh your way from the moment the curtain opens until back home.
