Knee High

Knee High

Not yet Fourth of July
Mid-June actually
Sunday drive
Quite a surprise
Just rolled in
Such a sweet spot
Piece of paradise
Sitting out the plague
Lots of yard work
Bonfires not of vanity
Left that all behind
Bucolic hibernation
Down to fighting weight
Lots of exercise
Natural chores
Digging drainage ditches
No need for gym
Me lumbering along
Keeping up a patter
Over field and stream
Unsteady on terrain
Enjoying the adventure
No threat of rain
But good for crops
Recalling mad dogs
Young and insane
Wolves howling
Call of the wild
Once in a while
Burning checks
Moosh Magique
Dancing in the flames
All those years
And no sense
Up in smoke
Into the woods
Trudging along
Cask of Amontillado
Steady as you go
Slow and Poe
Heart of darkness
To view beauties
Pot in pots
Enormous containers
Not corn you dolt
Already knee high
Soon soaring to sky
How things have changed
Each variety named
Smoked them all
Like Maui Wowie
Wiggy Thai Sticks
Acapulco Gold
Remember Panama Red
Maine Magic
Or Berkshire Bitches
Potent sensimilla
Fandango Andalusian
Reminded me of Amsterdam
Many years ago
Days of wake and bake
What’s this for
I asked the dealer
Each coffee shop had one
The stoner said
Quite out of his head
For walks along canals
Best with sex
Staring at spot on a wall
Going to movies
Taking an edge off
So strange now
Different from then
Don’t smoke no mo
But getting a kick
Out of lives of others
Tending to crop
Trees come fall
This one makes you big
That one makes you small
Eat me drink me
While some don’t
Do anything at all
Vicarious pleasures
Of other people
I’ll drink to that
A fine Minervois
Chateau de Paraza
Just on weekends
Time and tide
Make cowards of us all
À la recherche du temps
