Contemporary Sculpture at Chesterwood 2010

Into the Woods at Home of Daniel Chester French

By: Charles Giuliano - 06/28/2010

Among the much anticipated season events in the Berkshires is the annual outdoor sculpture exhibition at Chesterwood, the summer home of the renowned sculptor, Daniel Chester French in Stockbridge.

Were he alive today the creator of the ionic Lincoln Memorial on the Mall in Washington, D.C. would surely approve of offering a helping hand to the selection of works by a dozen artists.

The juror for Contemporary Sculpture at Chesterwood 2010 is the guest curator Richard Klein, Exhibitions Director of The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Ridgefield, Connecticut. The sculptors in the exhibition are: Gabriel Edward Adams, John Belardo, Rick Brown, Tim De Christopher, Philip Grausman, Peter De Camp Haines, Sarah Haviland, Phyllis Kulmatiski, Nina Levy, Tim Prentice, Mary Ellen Scherl, and Christopher Smith.

Self guided tours of the wood and the sculptures are available daily from now through October 11. There are also guides to the home and studio. We learned a lot about French and the techniques of creating monumental sculptures. One senses how much French loves his privacy at Chesterwood. Through the National Trust for Historic Preservation this treasure is open to the general public.

From now through the fall this is a great destination of family activity.
