Mundane

Works and Days

Mundane

Gripped by the ordinary
Fear seized the land
Dread creatures
Lurked by night
Hiding in darkness
Pools of light
Escape from gulag
Bolt for the forest
Mangroves looming
Infested swamps
Trodding along
Sloshing through muck
Hellhounds in pursuit
Oh to have yet a sunset
So many squandered
The merest trifles
Such trivial pursuits
Edifices drawn in sand
Washed away by tides
Lapping at my ankles
Swathed by foam
So far from home
Where the heart is
Worn down by quotidian
Numbing regimens
Tasks after meals
You wash while I dry
Endless marking of time
Set down by Hesiod
Works and days
Poetic tedium
Oddly salubrious
Edge of the beach
Brisk ocean breeze
Gulls squawking above
Ebb tides
Breaths of reverie
Useless to resist
As it is written
Now and then epics
Those grand moments
Sweeping gestures
Hand-to-hand combat
Flowers come spring
Marking Flanders fields
Where the brave fell
Carnadined like fall leaves
The color crimson
Can’t undo what’s been done
So shall it be
Where’s the fun
Done come and gone
Ordinary people
Alone and deranged
A kiss my love
To last forever
