The Price

South Florida co-production

By: - Sep 25, 2025

South Florida theater artist Gary Solomons has wanted to stage Arthur Miller’s dramatic masterpiece The Price since his drama school days in the 1980s. His long-time dream is finally coming true.

Solomons is a co-founder of Bridge Across the Pond Theater Company, a new professional South Florida-based group that is co-producing The Price this weekend and next at The Barclay Performing Arts’ intimate theater space in Boca Raton. Performance times are 8 p.m. Sept. 26 and Oct. 3; 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sept. 27 and Oct. 4; and 3 p.m. Sept. 28 and Oct. 5. Tickets are $30 for general admission, with a discounted price of $20 for students and industry professionals.

Written in 1967, the Tony Award-winning two-act play is set in the 1960s. It examines family dynamics, the literal price of furniture, and the figurative cost of one’s decisions.

Miller (1915–2005) was a major, award-winning 20th-century American playwright and activist. His plays often probe the moral struggles of the American middle class, critiquing the American Dream and confronting societal issues such as materialism, injustice, and mass hysteria. His works feature complex characters grappling with guilt, regret, and mortality—subjects rooted in Miller’s own experiences growing up during the Great Depression.

Solomons believes that although Miller wrote The Price nearly 60 years ago, the play resonates with modern audiences.
“To me, Mr. Miller always feels fresh, that is and was his genius,” Solomons says. “His themes are universal and timeless.”

Thanks to the venue’s intimacy, Solomons says audiences will feel as though they are in the attic alongside the characters.

That attic in a Manhattan brownstone during the 1960s provides the play’s setting. Inside, two brothers, Victor and Walter Franz, reunite after years apart to sell their deceased father’s belongings. The meeting forces them to confront past sacrifices and divergent life choices, while the memories stirred by their father’s possessions reignite old hostilities.

The play explores the price of choices, as well as questions of personal integrity, guilt, and the struggle to make peace with one’s life. Many consider The Price one of Miller’s most personal works.

Bridge Across the Pond Theater Company, Barclay Performing Arts, and The Find Your Voice Foundation are producing the show.

Dan Levine, Bridge Across the Pond’s co-founder and one of the production’s leads, has performed with Barclay Performing Arts and is “good friends” with Christine Barclay, Solomons says. Solomons and Levine have been friends for many years, working on theater projects together before founding Bridge Across the Pond this past July. Their goal is to present shows not normally seen in South Florida.
“We very much want to be a part of the local theater community with a reputation for presenting challenging, at times, edgy plays outside of the norm,” Solomons says. “As we move forward, we would like to present works celebrating life experience both here and in the UK.”

Although Solomons now lives in South Florida, he is originally from England. The company’s name, he says, “symbolizes the international appeal of great theater as well as representing the different backgrounds of the founding members.”

In addition to Bridge Across the Pond and Barclay Performing Arts, the third partner for this production is The Find Your Voice Foundation. This South Florida-based nonprofit organization dedicates itself to “supporting like-minded arts-focused, creative businesses and contractors whose missions are directed toward creating a healthier, more tolerant, confident, fulfilled and inclusive community.” Its website is https://findyourvoice.foundation.

Solomons adds that the cast has been working hard in preparation for opening night.
“Each actor is superb,” he says. “Rehearsals have been hard work because of the huge amount of dialogue, but ultimately (it’s been) very rewarding. We hope people will feel we have done justice to the script and that we are a company worthy of support and a following.”

The cast comprises Levine as Victor, Alexis Mottesheard as Esther, Rhett Pennell as Walter, and Karl Zoisl as Solomon.
