McNamara uses photographs as aids, however, the paintings are not “photo-realistic”: each painting strays away from a strict accounting of the subject matter and takes on a life of its own.

In 1934 it was anonymously donated to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). It has been suggested that it was influenced by Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity. To which the artist replied that the soft watches were not inspired by the theory of relativity, but by the surrealist perception of a Camembert melting in the sun.
