By: - Jun 16th, 2025Colleague and friend Edward Fast Eddy Rubin was astounding and incorrigible. He was a regular contributor to Berkshire Fine Arts. Though he enjoyed getting comped he was slow to submit reviews often just when shows were about to or already had closed. He was the leader of our pack with unflinching panache and humor. The moniker came early on when he worked for a PR firm. He was dispatched with orders "Eddy, quick go here or there and do this or that." His promptness in executing these commands identified him as Fast Eddy. This obit is written by New Orleans based critic and ATCA member Alan Smason.

Berkshire Photographer Jonas Dovydenas 1939-2025
Fatal Accident in Lithuania
By: - Sep 24th, 2025Berkshire artists and patrons Jonas and Betsy Dovydenas visited his native Lithuania a couple of times each year. He was on hand to present an annual prize for Best Lithuanian Novel which he funded. On September 23 they were involved in an accident. He was killed and she was injured. We interacted with them recently during a performance at Shakespeare & Company. As a settlement with the cult Bible Speaks, for a time, they owned the campus of the former Lenox School for Boys which is now the campus of Shakespeare & Company. In 2014 I interviewed him about his photography exhibition at the Lenox Library.

By: - Sep 25th, 2025A couple of days ago my friend Jonas Dovydenas was killed in a collision while visiting his native Lithuania. He was a renowned photographer and philanthropist. For a number of years he was on the board of The Mount with two as chairman. In 2010 he flew in for lunch. We met at the North Adams airport. But he forgot the book, a work in progress, that he wanted to show me. It was back in Pittsfield. We flew back, seven minutes each way, for a truly memorable experience.

As a gallerist he had a deep and lasting impact but few of the A list works he showed remained in Boston. Italian born with a global vision his program was light years out of reach for earth bound and generally reactionary collectors, curators and critics. While they came to look mostly collectors failed to open their wallets. There were token sales to the MFA and at that time the ICA did not collect.

James T. Demetrion at 90
Former Director of Hirshorn Museum

Demetrion, the second and longest-serving director of the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (1984–2001) and director of the Des Moines Art Center (1969–1984) and Pasadena Art Museum (1964–1966), died Nov. 29. Demetrion had celebrated his 90th birthday in July.

Leader and Namesake of a Boston Band
By: - Apr 12th, 2017J. Geils (1946-2017) was the guitarist and leader of Boston's iconic J. Geils Band. The blues and rock group started in 1987 when lead singer Peter Wolf joined after Hallucinations broke up. Initially a blues based band they toured relentlessly while enjoying modest hits and mostly FM radio play. That changed when they left Atlantic Records and released the hit album Centerfold for Capitol/ EMI in 1981. While touring arenas for several years the band broke up after one last album when Wolf left to pursue a solo career.
