Berkshire Art Museum in North Adams
By: - Jul 02nd, 2022Covid delayed the opening of Artists of the Thursday Chinese Dinner Group by two years. It was worth the wait with a tasty buffet dinner on opening night at Berkshire Art Museum in downtown North Adams. The former church houses the Barbara and Eric Rudd Art Foundation, Most of the church displays a permanent installation of his work. The three levels of the tower galleries has a lively display of works by diners and artists.

Contemporary Native American artists have been egregiously neglected by the mainstream American art world — we lag far behind Canada. The PEM has just reinstalled its American collection, which runs from the Colonial era to the present, and it is an ambitious, intriguing, but problematic exhibition.

Tomm El-Saieh, a Haitian-born artist and curator who lives and works in Miami, organized the display for WCMA. El-Saieh’s work is the subject of Tomm El-Saieh: Imaginary City, a year-long solo exhibition at the Clark Art Institute.

Arguably the content is still relevant; particularly in Boston where aspects of figuration have morphed from the Boston Expressionists of the 1930s through the present. The Museum of Fine Arts is currently presenting the controversial Ku Klux Klan paintings of Philip Guston who taught at the Boston University School of Fine Arts. Guston found a haven in Boston while on the lam and shunned as reactionary by the NY art world.
